Building Plans Approved Provincial Summary June 2023
Three provinces recorded an increase in June 2023, compared to the same month in 2022, namely Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Limpopo, with weaker rate of approvals reported across the rest of the provinces. Eastern Cape was supported by an increase in industrial approvals, Gauteng by a moderate rise in office and retail space and Mpumalanga by an increase in retail space approvals. Overall, approvals for June 2023 rose 28 percent m-m with a marginal 0.2 percent y-y decline. Approvals exceeded 1.3 million sqm for the month, the highest level since November 2022. A steep 22 percent decline in residential approvals was counteracted by a 75 percent increase in approvals for non-residential buildings. The outlook for residential buildings is significantly weaker, while there has been some recovery in the non-residential market, albeit coming off a low base
