None of the four higher capacity provinces were spared in January 2023, with a broad base sharp decline in the value of private sector plans approved. With over 400 000 sqm fewer plans approved, Gauteng recorded the steepest decline, followed by Kwazulu Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape. Only two provinces recorded an increase compared to last year, Northern Cape and the North West Province. Overall sqm approved fell by 41 percent, with equally strong contractions in both the residential and non-residential markets.
