Building Plans Approved by Province and Type Jan 1994 - August 2024
The number of square metres approved rose moderately for the 2nd consecutive month, up 1.5 percent y-y in August, with Western Cape continuing to take the lead. Good news, is the increase reported in two key provinces, namely Western Cape and Gauteng, with North West and Mpumalanga also showing an increase in demand compared to the same month in 2023. For the 12-month period up to August 2024, approvals are down 2 million square metres, with different market segments outperforming in some provinces, like industrial space and multi-unit housing developments. The building industry is not a blueprint fits all with strong provincial differentation. Capital expenditure on buildings and other fixed structures, including conditional grants on health and education infrastructure and human settlements, further highlights that some provinces are bucking the somewhat muted national trend.
