Building Approvals Annual 2022

Knysna maintained its position for the 2nd consecutive year as the municipality that had the highest number of sqm approved in a year, including both home and other commercial buildings. Approvals increased by 61 percent y-y in 2022 to around 860 000 sqm. Knysna is also the municipality that have shown the strongest increase by comparison to 2021. This means private projects worth over R6bn were improved over last year, an increase of R2.6bn in rand terms.  There were also notable increases in the northern and central parts of eThekwini, while Mossel Bay ranked 4th in terms of annual growth. Kempton Park had the 2nd highest number of sqm approved, but with a marginal 2 percent y-y increase, while the eastern parts of Tshwane recorded a 16 percent increase, putting them in 3rd position.

This dataset is a summary of the annual building statistics released by Stats SA, at municipal and provincial level, with a focus on approvals, from 2010 to 2022.
