
Civil Awards Hold 80% Growth YTD, But Tender Pipeline Remains Fragile
South Africa’s construction sector in August 2025 reflected a mixed but concerning trend. The value of projects awarded fell by 31% y-y to R6.3bn, with both civil and building sectors weakening after previous months of recovery. Civil awards declined by 29% y-y to R4.7bn, though they remained 80% higher year-to-date, supported by large Mpumalanga projects. In contrast, the building sector contracted sharply, down 36% y-y in August and nearly 40% lower year-to-date, highlighting sustained weakness in private sector demand.
