Approvals for new housing developments by the private sector has slowed to the lowest level, dating as far back as 1996, while its population has more than doubled from 7.6 million (1996) to 15.8 million (2021). At the current growth rate the population in Gauteng is estimated to reach 20.2 million by 2030 and 26.5 million by 2040.
