Wholesale Trade and Retail Sales: Construction Materials January 2008 - April 2026
South Africa's wholesale construction and building materials market continued to strengthen during the first four months of 2026, with sales increasing by 6.8% compared to the same period in 2025. Growth accelerated during February, March and April, suggesting improving demand across the construction supply chain. The construction sector was also one of the better performing sectors in the wholesale trade market.
Wholesale material sales are often one of the earliest indicators of future construction activity, as contractors and developers typically purchase materials before work begins on site. While the data does not directly measure construction output, the increase suggests growing procurement activity and improving confidence among project owners, contractors and merchants.
The latest figures add to evidence that parts of the construction sector are gradually gaining momentum during 2026, supported by stronger building approvals, selected infrastructure projects and ongoing private sector development activity. However, the pace of future construction growth will ultimately depend on how quickly planned and awarded projects progress into physical construction.
