South Africa's construction sector continues to build momentum, but the latest developments suggest that activity alone is no longer a reliable measure of industry health. Several indicators point to a market that is becoming considerably busier, supported by major road projects, industrial investment, growing work in progress and renewed confidence in parts of the civil engineering sector. Yet beneath this improving pipeline, contractors remain under increasing financial pressure.

Industry Insight's latest Quarterly Financial Statistics analysis showed construction turnover increasing by 3.5% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2026, while work in progress more than doubled compared with a year earlier, indicating that many projects have finally moved beyond procurement......
