Large infrastructure projects and long-term investment plans dominated construction-related developments this week. Airports Company South Africa unveiled a R21.7 billion five-year investment programme covering major upgrades across six airports, while construction officially got underway on the R750 million Waterfall City Conference Centre and Hotel in Gauteng. Infrastructure South Africa also launched the third round of its project preparation programme, backed by R600 million to help national, provincial and local government move large infrastructure projects from planning to implementation.
The week also exposed some of the challenges facing infrastructure delivery. The Pretoria High Court set aside SANRAL's R9.5 billion routine road maintenance tender, forcing the agency to abandon its contractor panel approach and return to open tendering.
