Preferred Construction Material Supplier and Competitor Survey March 2025

The Preferred Supplier and Competitor Survey (PSS) provides an in-depth look at the construction materials market, highlighting supplier participation, contractor challenges, and industry trends. The report measures supplier engagement using the Market Exposure Rate (MER), which reflects supplier involvement based on project values rather than sales volumes.

Executive Summary

The March 2025 Preferred Supplier Survey reveals critical trends shaping the construction materials supply chain in South Africa. Despite challenging market conditions, top suppliers continue to secure exposure on high-value projects, with a total of 77 projects worth R12.9 billion surveyed. However, supplier visibility is under pressure as 29% of projects could not be surveyed due to unreachable contractors, and 15% declined to disclose supply chain information. Material choice is driven largely by trusted professional teams (50%) and supplier proximity (24%), while price remains a secondary factor in most categories—indicating a shift toward reliability and long-term value over cost. The survey has identified over 2,700  suppliers identified across various material categories. Contractor engagement remains challenging, with a 42% response rate achieved in March and significant regional variation. Meanwhile, 44 project cancellations in February, mainly in Gauteng, reflect deeper issues around funding, project cancellations and delays.
