Preferred Construction Material Supplier and Competitor Survey August 2026
The Preferred Supplier Survey, pioneered by Industry Insight, evaluates the Market Exposure Rate (MER) of key construction material suppliers within the construction industry. MER is used to measure supplier participation in projects based on their exposure to project values rather than sales volumes.
The August 2026 Preferred Supplier Survey shows that construction activity remains heavily influenced by projects awarded well before the current survey period. Civil engineering accounted for 66% of the January 2026 awards included, led mainly by water and road projects, while building activity was concentrated in non-residential work, particularly education facilities. Over the last 12 months, 447 projects valued at around R64bn were surveyed, with the value of projects increasing by 28% despite a 14% decline in the number of projects surveyed.
Results were strongly influenced by several large road contracts. Mpumalanga accounted for R7.5bn, or 55% of the roughly R13bn worth of projects surveyed during the month, largely due to two major N2 upgrades valued at R3.7bn and R3.1bn.
Implementation delays remain a prominent feature of the survey, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, where funding constraints and delayed payments are contributing to projects being placed on hold, progressing on a stop-start basis or not commencing at all.
