Construction Formal Employment March 2025 (Source Stats SA Quarterly Employment Earnings)
Formal employment in construction according to Stats SA's Formal Employment Earnings survey (conducted amongst businesses), rose 1.1 percent y-y in the 1st quarter of 2025 to 598 527, supported largely by an increase in formal employment involved in site preparations that rose 3.3 percent. Employment in structural buildings and civil engineering rose 2.8 percent y-y. According to this survey, gross earnings in construction rose 3.8 percent y-y to R43.9bn in 2025 Q1, and by 2.7 percent in terms of average earnings by month and employee to R24 168.
By comparison total earnings in the government sector rose 5.1 percent y-y to R228bn, with average monthly earnings up 8.1 percent (well above the national average) to R35 741.
