Cement Imports ease in September but remain up 30 percent year to date, with growth led by Cape Town

 Cement imports fell by 8.8% year-on-year in September to 104 229 tons, following a sharp 94% increase in August. Despite this pullback, total imports for the first nine months of 2025 remained significantly higher at 1.06 million tons, representing a 29.6% year-on-year increase. On the domestic front, mineral sales of limestone, a key raw input for cement production, rose by 2.2% in August after a 15% increase in July, suggesting a mild recovery in local output. However, with overall nominal sales growth of less than 1%, import competition continues to weigh heavily on local producers.

Vietnam remains the dominant source of cement imports, with most volumes entering via Durban. However, Cape Town has seen a marked increase in import activity, with nearly 50 000 tons recorded in August and 120 000 tons over the first nine months of 2025—up 171% year-on-year. Cape Town’s share of total Vietnamese imports rose to 13% between January and September 2025, from 8% in the same period of 2024. Imports via Durban climbed 23% to 774 269 tons, while those through Port Elizabeth declined by 30% to 44 653 tons. Imports from Mozambique rose 59% to 83 663 tons via Komatipoort, and those from Namibia increased 34% to 40 674 tons, largely through the Skilpadsnek entry point.
