Building Plans Approved by Province and Type January 1994 - March 2026
Private sector building plan approvals showed improved short-term momentum in March 2026, with total approvals increasing by 20.4% y/y, driven mainly by stronger residential activity in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. While retail approvals rebounded sharply from a low base, industrial activity remained subdued, and Gauteng continued to weigh on national performance. Despite the stronger monthly outcome, the broader 12-month trend remained under pressure, highlighting an uneven recovery across South Africa’s private sector construction market.
