Industry Insight’s latest Cement Retailer Distribution Survey highlights the growing role of retailers within South Africa’s construction supply chain. Based on 129 active construction projects valued at R13.2 billion, the survey found that retailers now account for 46% of cement exposure by project value and are involved in nearly three-quarters of all projects surveyed. This marks a significant increase from approximately 30% in 2022 and confirms that retailers have become an established route-to-market for mainstream construction projects rather than simply serving DIY and small contractor demand. Since 2022 we have identified 156 different retailers across the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The findings show that retailer-supplied cement is now being used across major residential, healthcare, commercial, industrial and infrastructure-related projects, with strong penetration in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga. Contractor feedback suggests that factors such as location, product availability, service and account facilities are becoming increasingly important in supplier selection. As construction activity shifts towards high-growth provinces and infrastructure-led investment, the report concludes that strong distribution networks and market access strategies are becoming as important as production capacity in determining future growth opportunities within the cement industry.<\/p>\n
